About

Born on 5 October 1943 in Deoband, India, and the son of Mufti Muhammad Shafi, the first Grand Mufti of Pakistan. He graduated from the alim course at Darul Uloom Karachi in 1959 and completed takhassus in fiqh and ifta there in 1961. He also holds a BA (1964) and an LLB (1967) from the University of Karachi and an MA in Arabic literature from the University of the Punjab (1970).

He served on the Council of Islamic Ideology (1977–1981), as a judge of the Federal Shariat Court (1981–1982) and on the Shariat Appellate Bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan (1982–2002). He is a permanent member of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy in Jeddah, where he served as vice chairman, and is widely consulted on Islamic finance. He has written more than 140 books in Arabic, Urdu and English.
